Tabani Moyo
Regional Director, Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA)
Short bio
Dr Tabani Moyo has more than 20 years of experience in lobbying for freedom of expression in Africa and contributed immensely in connecting the dots on expression issues in the global south on the global agenda. He is currently doubling as Regional Director for MISA and Country Director for MISA Zimbabwe. Moyo served his 1st term in the IFEX Council and seeking re-election for the last term. He also serves as the Vice Chairperson for the pan-African network Africa Freedom of Information Centre based in Kampala. He also advises the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) Special Rapporteur on Access to Information and Freedom of Expression.
Moyo leads a team of dedicated activists on expression that have contributed immensely to evidence-centred advocacy through publications such as So Is This Democracy? ; Africa Media Barometer and State of Press Freedom in Southern Africa among others. In running for the second term, his campaign message is United in Purpose! Strong in Action! This is because IFEX should maintain its global thought leadership by utilising the diversity of its members' skill sets and alliances. IFEX should prioritise the establishment of a new compact among its members and alliances on solidarity and genuine collaboration in defence of expression during complex times and that IFEX remains agile in response to attacks from expression from moving environmental targets.
I bring a unique blend of communications, marketing, business administration and academia to enhance the council’s strategic thrust. I have a wide network of relationships with the media, csos, academia, and policymakers and believe in the diversity of the network members to be the anchor in promoting and defending expression in this otherwise fragmented world.
