Short bio
I am lawyer for more than thirty-years, with a postgraduate in Constitutional Law, and I live in Costa Rica.
I’ve worked for the Costa Rican Association of Journalists since 2002. As a defense lawyer, for instance, on freedom of expression.
From 2017 until today, I dedicate part of my time as a substitute judge of the Constitutional Court of Costa Rica, the highest in the country.
Also writing the occasional articles in the media about human rights issues, with special emphasis on freedom of speech and access to information.
In 2005, together with a large group of journalists, we opened the Press and Freedom of Expression Institute, IPLEX. IPLEX has been promoting, for 18 years, the defense and promotion of freedom of speech and access to public information in my country.
During that I’ve become a part of the Board of Directors of IPLEX, in different positions and I have presided it from 2010 to 2019. Currently working on the Board of Directors.
IPLEX has been a member of IFEX since October 2015.
I have been part of the IFEX ALC Steering committee since 2018 and became a chair since 2019, my appointment ends in September of this year.
I have also participated in various instances and actions in defense of freedom of expression both in my country and in the Americas.
IPLEX is proposing my name for the IFEX Council with the will and commitment to collaborate and contribute to the reinforcing of the network.
IFEX is a leader in defending the right to freedom of expression and access to information, the right to seek, receive and impart information. I hope to keep contributing to that mission.
